The first hand-wound mechanical movement in the TAG Heuer Carrera series since 1996, this limited edition of 6,000 watches hosts a movement that was historically used in the pocket watches of the 1960s.

The polished steel case measures 43mm. The small second’s hand at 6 o’clock with a semi-circular graduation has a rhodium hand indicating 0 to 30 seconds and a red hand indicating 30 to 60 seconds. Clous de Paris decoration is used on the movement and on the rubber strap. The crystal is sapphire with AR coating, and it features a display back

Human ID Chips

The technology is available, but the potential for misuse is almost limitless.

“Illuminati want my mind, soul, and my body
Secret society, tryin to keep they eye on me
But I’m stay incogni’, in places they can’t find me
Make my moves strategically, the G.O.D.”

-Prodigy of  Mobb Deep circa 1995

While it’s easy to reject the notion of placing little ID chips inside humans as an ominous Orwellian invasion of individual rights, I suspect it’s inevitable that in my lifetime we will all have some kind of computerized implants. My problem is not with the technology, known as chipping, or with the companies that sell it. My concern stems from my lack of trust in institutions and lack of belief that the technology will be forever restricted to beneficial, socially acceptable uses.

Chipping involves implanting a transponder chip below the skin for identification purposes. VeriChip (CHIP), the one company that has gained FDA clearance to perform this procedure, has emerged as the process’s leading advocate. The implant procedure itself is simple and mostly painless, accomplished in a doctor’s office in a matter of seconds.

Generally speaking, the only data stored on the chip is a 16-digit ID number that cross-references to a record in VeriChip’s database. Nevertheless the chip raises a number of troubling concerns: (more…)

According to a recent AP report, 300,000 people in Kenya were forced to leave their homes, and over 800 people were killed during this past month’s post-election violence.

Reuters reported today that, “Increasing numbers of Kenyan women and children are raped nightly in displacement camps, where sexual violence is used to threaten and intimidate . . .”

I want to do something.

But what can one person do?

Feministing suggests making donations to the Kenya Red Cross Society.

El Oso made a donation through MamaMikes. According to the MamaMikes web site, $25 ( £ 12.50 or € 17.24 ) will buy either of the following items:

• 5 litres of cooking oil, sanitary products, 2kg of unga, 2kg rice and a pair of shoes
• or one bale of unga
• or a mattress
• or a blanket.

The Vuma Kenya Initiative’s site has a list of Kenya related blogs, and a list of 10 places to donate. One of the places on their list is the Nairobi Women’s Hospital’s Gender Violence Recovery Center which is, “currently attempting to deal with the dramatic increase in sexual violence following the Kenyan presidential election.”

Ida Wahlstrom’s post, Kenya’s Crossroads: What You Can Do is full of resources for how you can help. She recommends that you stay informed through Pambazuka News’ coverage of the situation.

You can also keep informed about breaking news on Global Voices’ roundup of bloggers’ coverage of Kenya, and read background information on the Genocide Intervention Network.
